8th BALKAN PHYSICS OLYMPIAD 2026

We are delighted to announce the organization of the 8th Balkan Physics Olympiad–BPO8, June 27-30, 2026, Istanbul Atatürk Science High School İstanbul Turkiye.

The Turkish Physical Society (TPS) will be host and organize the 8th Balkan Physics Olympiad – 2026 (BPO8) under the auspices of the Balkan Physical Union (BPU). The competition will be supported by the European Physical Society (EPS), Turkish Ministry of Education, Istanbul Atatürk Science High School, Maltepe University, Nişantası University and Sani Şener Foundation.

The Turkish Physical Society (TPS) is expected to welcome students from 10 BPU countries (Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Greece, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Serbia and Türkiye) and 7 guest countries (Avusturya (Austria), Bosna-Hersek, Hırvatistan (Croatia), Kazakhstan, Slovenya, Türkmenistan, Oman) in İstanbul Türkiye.

Second Balkan Student Summer School
on Quantum Physics
(Thessaloniki, August 25-29 2025)
The 2025 International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) recognizes 100 years since the initial development of quantum mechanics. In this framework the Balkan Physical Union, the Greek Physical Society, the European Physical Society and Ellinogermaniki Agogi are organising the 2nd Balkan Students Summer School on Quantum Physics.

The 2nd Balkan Students Summer School aims to demonstrate role of quantum physics education, its importance in preparing the next generation of scientists and engineers, and how it could be integrated in the current school curricula. Quantum Physics education is becoming increasingly important as advancements in quantum technologies such as quantum computing, quantum cryptography, and quantum sensing continue to shape the future. As industries adopt quantum innovations, the need for skilled professionals with a strong understanding of quantum mechanics grows.

The school focuses on teaching the principles of quantum mechanics, the branch of physics that deals with the behavior of matter and energy at the smallest scales. Students will explore the fundamental concepts such as wave-particle duality, quantum superposition, and quantum entanglement, which are critical to understanding the behavior of quantum systems.

As quantum technologies become more prevalent, the ability to understand and apply quantum principles will be a valuable asset. Quantum physics education fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills, preparing students to contribute to innovative research and development that will shape future technology.

Alexander Petrov, former BPU President passed away
(September, 2024)

With deep sadness, the Executive Committee of the BPU announces the passing into the world of eternal shadows of the former president of the BPU, Academician Alexander Petrov from Bulgaria, at the age of 75. During his lifetime he made important contributions to the development of Physics in the Balkan region, with a prodigious scientific career, a full and dignified life, leaving behind him an important legacy.

BPU11 PoS – Proceedings is Published

The EPJ Plus (IF 3.4), Special Volume, “Focus Point on Physics in the Balkans: Perspectives and Challenges”, Editors: L. Bergé, G. S. Djordjević and Z. V. Popović,

devoted to the BPU11 Congress, is, and will be, fully available from April 2nd till May 31st, 2024.

This issue contains 1 Editorial article and 11 original scientific papers with review elements, initiated by the invited lectures given at the BPU11 Congress.

Due to the kindness of our publishing partner EPJ Plus and Springer, beside 2 moths open access, a limited number of hard copies has been printed.

These copies will be offered, free of charge, to a limited number of libraries in BPU countries.

Beside the PoS BPU11 Congress Proceedings and the EPJ Plus Focus Point, we expect to have the third and the last publication, in cooperation with IJMPA and WS, devoted to the Congress` events very soon.
